Adrenal exhaustion is one of the more commonly used terms for hypoadrenia.  In plain language, this breakdown, or failure to work at optimum capacity, occurs due to prolonged overuse of the adrenal glands.  The first stage in this breakdown is known as adrenal fatigue, as the glands are beginning to wear down;  if the problem is not rectified, the more serious state of adrenal exaustion can occur;  and can eventually lead to the chronic condition known as Addison's Disease.

It is not difficult to understand how this process happens.  As one of the main functions of the adrenal glands is to assist as a short-term mechanism, when they are pushed beyond this basic short-term function they begin to wear out.  The glands are meant to produce cortisol, at an increased level to aid in coping with stress factors;  when the stress factors are out of the normal range, generally by being persistent and extreme, the adrenal glands begin to fail to operate properly, thus failing to produce cortisol.

Cortisol is referred to as a stress hormone.  What this means is that when factors necessitate it, it is produced at a high level;  this increased level is meant to be short-term and temporary, and the problems arise when the factors are prolonged.  The factors involved in increased cortisol production are usually persistent, extreme emotional stress, and, in some cases, viral infections.  When either of these factors are not appropriately dealt with, it begins a breakdown of the adrenal glands' ability to function properly.

The breakdown of the adrenal glands' functioning and impaired cortisone output can, in turn, lead to a wide range of physical maladies, psychological abnormalities, and psychosomatic problems.  If it continues to remain untreated, it can become an affecting factor toward more serious medical issues.  The bottom line is that prolonged or extreme stress is not only debilitating, it can kill.

While hypoadrenia is a common term, adrenal fatigue and adrenal exhaustion are both more widely used and less acceptable in the medical community.  Although experts argue the validity of a legitimate diagnosis, the latter terms are most frequently used by those in the pseudo-medical areas such as those who practice “alternative” medicine, “natural” medicine, and “folk” theories.  Allowing such practices does little but undermine the validity of this condition, resulting in widespread misconceptions and lessening the range of true help for those who suffer from its symptoms.

The symptoms of adrenal exhaustion can range from mildly difficult to completely debilitating.  The wide variety of symptoms can range from those which affect the body to those which affect the mind;  in most cases there is a combination of both.  In the interest of those who are afflicted with this condition, it is appropriate for it to be taken seriously and treated in its earliest stages so that further breakdown of the person's health does not occur.

For the best possible results, a person should be in the position of feeling confident that he or she can get the necessary help from a medical practitioner, rather than having to rely on less-reputable alternatives for effective treatment.
