Have you thought about trying bioidentical hormone replacement therapy to get relief from the symptoms of menopause? You have probably read about other people who use this therapy and swear that they would never want to be without it. What’s so special about bioidentical hormones?

Bioidentical hormones are made in laboratories, but your body can use them as if it produced the hormones all by itself.  A woman taking these hormones can restore the balance in her body by working with a health care practitioner who will carefully monitor the kind and amount she is taking in order to individually personalize the hormones to suit the patient.  You can also buy bioidentical hormones as over the counter products, which can work well for some women.

These hormones are said to be better than the usual prescription drugs that are what is approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use in menopausal women.  Some allopathic doctors frown on the use of bioidenticals, while others welcome the chance to help their patients explore a more natural method of hormone replacement therapy to control the hot flashes, mood swings, and vaginal dryness that menopause causes.

When the Woman’s Health Initiative reported in 2002 that synthetic hormone replacement therapy posed more health risks and fewer benefits for women who were prescribed these drugs, women everywhere were worried that they had inadvertently done some sort of harm to their bodies by taking them.  They began clamoring for an alternate medication, and bioidentical hormone replacement began to grow in popularity. The Food and Drug administration would not give a patent to bioidentical hormones because they are derived from natural products.

What do you need to have in order to use bioidentical hormone replacement? It is very simple and easy. All you need is estrogen and progestin, which is naturally made from soybeans and wild yams. You can find this as an over the counter solution in cream form. Sometimes, you may also need one of three distinctly different types of estrogen – estradiol, estrone, and estriol – to go with the. A visit to a compounding pharmacist with a prescription from your health care practitioner and a copy of your blood work will get you a hormone concoction that is formulated exactly for you.

You can get similar results by purchasing plant based natural progesterone and phytoestrogen products over the counter at a health food or drug store. You can then add in other hormones and play with the dosages under the supervision of a trained naturopath until you have hit on a combination that is right for you. No two women are alike, so therefore no two women need the exact same amount of hormones on a daily basis.

This is part of the beauty of bioidentical hormone replacement. When taking regular prescription drugs for menopause, you are stuck with just that one dosage. It is much better to be able to have hormones tailored to suit you and your situation. Try the over the counter selections, and find a good compounding pharmacist who will work with you so that you can experience for yourself just how good it can feel to have your hormones completely balanced.
