Dear Dr. Banerjee: Four years ago I got sick with flue like symptoms. I took medications for the low grade fever and the general achy feeling throughout my body. After a few weeks the fever and the pain was gone but every since then I have been always been so exhausted. My doctors thinks I have chronic fatigue syndrome. It also doesn’t help that I have a difficult time falling asleep. What causes chronic fatigue syndrome and how can I get better? I am taking so many medications and but I still have the fatigue. I have been suffering with chronic fatigue for four years now. Julie M, CA

Dear Julie: Unfortunately there are no known causes of chronic fatigue syndrome and most of the treatments are directed towards relieving symptoms. Chronic fatigue syndrome is complicated and it doesn’t seem to improve with bed rest. The fatigue may also get worse with mental or physical activity. The problem with this disorder is that there are no definite causes and there is nothing to measure.

Most of the chronic fatigue patients I take care of started having the fatigue after some kind of infection. And most of them had stress or trauma about the same time. The symptoms come on gradually without a specific start date. It is very close to fibromyalgia.

So how do you treat a condition that has no known causes, no diagnostic labs to measure, and no specific treatments?

Keep reading and I reveal to you how I help my patients with chronic fatigue…

Some other signs and symptoms of chronic fatigue other than the extreme exhaustion are: sore throat, memory loss, poor concentration, muscle soreness, pain that moves from joint to joint, headaches, and insomnia. According to the international chronic fatigue study group, if you have unexplained persistent fatigue for six months or more with four of the signs and symptoms we talked about then you meet their diagnostic criteria for chronic fatigue.

Some other symptoms may include: bloating, diarrhea, abdominal pain, dizziness, earache, irregular heartbeat, jaw pain, morning stiffness, nausea, night sweats, depression, anxiety, and weight loss.

I addition to working with your doctor its important you follow a healthy life style. Learn to reduce stress from your life. If you know specific physical or emotional stress that will cause a flare up, it is a good idea to have a plan in advance to deal with the stress. Make sure you make time for your self.

One thing that helps with stress is to have a set time each day to do some deep breathing exercise and meditate. There are lots of different types of meditation, and they all work if you are persistent and do them correctly. My favorite is deep breathing. You can do this anywhere, and anytime. It works wonders for stress. There are also many brain synchronization CDs that will help reduce stress also.

If you are having trouble falling asleep then your circadian rhythm is off. Our hormones are controlled by what are known as cosmic cycles. They are cosmic cycles because they are related to cosmic events outside of our bodies. One of the major cycles is the daily cycle of our exposure to light and dark based what the sun is doing with the earth.

So when the sun comes up in the morning your cortisol levels will start to peak right around 6 in the morning. And this is based on our hormonal rhythm. As the sun comes up, our cortisol levels peak. Over the cause of the day as the sun starts to go down the cortisol level will start to drop. At around 6 at night when the sun is going down the cortisol level is going to drop.

Your sleep cycle is regulated by your adrenal hormones. If this natural rhythm is disrupted your sleep will suffer. Women frequently experience sleep problems due to female hormone imbalances, specifically when progesterone is low.

Emotional stress and blood sugar regulation problems are the two most common underlying causes for adrenal dysfunction and female hormone imbalances. These imbalances leads to sleep problems.

Melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep, is also a key to immune function. Low bedtime melatonin levels result in problems falling asleep. Low melatonin during the early morning hours causes people to wake between 2 am and 4 am.  Anytime melatonin levels are low immune system function is depressed.  Prior to using any hormone, including melatonin, appropriate lab testing is required.

Fatigue can also be due to food sensitivities. Unstable blood sugar, over consumption of carbohydrates and sweets and food sensitivities all contribute to fatigue. So does undetected infections that weaken immune function are a leading cause of fatigue.

The most important thing to get is that when you are tired it means that your adrenal glands are exhausted or burned out. Fatigue and our energy levels are regulated by the hormones cortisol and DHEA. If you are tired there is adrenal burnout. We can measure with lab test how your adrenal glands are burned out, and exactly how to restore adrenal function.

The main source of energy in your body comes from your food. You need to able to digest and absorb nutrients from your diet in order to have normal energy level. The most important thing is this regard is eat a gluten free diet. And you have to make sure you absorb the nutrients you are eating we need to make sure that your digestive tract is working properly. So you get your gut tested also.
