The American Diabetes Association - A Champion In the Fight For Diabetes

A leading nonprofit organization devoted to in the fight for diabetes, The American Diabetes Association has been around since 1940.  This organization provides information about this disease and how others can be more aware of prevention and treatment.  They are also about improving the quality of life for those who are going through diabetes.

The American Diabetes Association is responsible for things like general information on diabetes, diabetes research and finding cures.

Their headquarters are located in Alexandria, Virginia and they also have a National Call Center.  Knowledgeable and experienced representatives are available to assist you with any information regarding diabetes and related issues.  You can also get information regarding programs sponsored by the American Diabetes Association.

What’s also good about this center is that they have representatives who can assist you either in English or Spanish.  This helps a lot, since the people mostly affected with diabetes nowadays are minorities (African-Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders).

In addition to the above, the American Diabetes Association has informative pamphlets on different topics regarding diabetes.  The call center can also assist you with finding seminars endorsed by the organization; refer you to people who can assist you in your local area; refer you to programs and events in your local area; if you would like to volunteer in your area, they can help you with that also.

The American Diabetes Association also accepts donations which can help them further their cause to champion diabetes and related health issues.  You can give your donations in different ways:

Ÿ         Wedding Gift

Ÿ         Honor Gift

Ÿ         Memorial Gift

Ÿ         General Gift

Ÿ         Stocks and Funds

One of the most important things that the American Diabetes Association does is to provide information on how and what you should eat.  Eating the right foods can keep your diabetes under control.  You can also browse through the free recipes that are on their site and get nutrition tips.

The organization also talks about the importance of weight loss, exercise and keeping physically fit.  They give examples of some of the exercises you can do to keep you active and keep your diabetes under control.

Every year, the organization hosts fund raising events to raise awareness of diabetes.  The monies raised go to continue the fight against the disease.

A few of them are listed here:

  • Step Out To Fight Diabetes - this event not only helps to bring further awareness, the money raised is used to help find a cure.  Walking a few miles to further the cause is what helps to bring awareness to diabetes.  Anyone is allowed to participate in this event.
  • Step Up To Fight Diabetes consists of walking 10 miles in a specific area.  During this walk, you will be able to take in the sights and scenes of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
  • School Walk For Diabetes is an educational fund raising event that emphasizes living a healthy lifestyle for students.  People who get involved learn about diabetes and things they can do to prevent the disease.  The monies raised goes to research and information.

As long as there are diabetics, the American Diabetes Association will continue to work on behalf of those dealing with the disease.
