What You Should Know When Purchasing Testing Supplies For Diabetes

Diabetes is affecting more people now and it can hit anyone, starting with children to adults.
You should know what’s going on with your blood glucose on a daily basis.  The medical industry has come a long way with different instruments used to test your blood glucose levels.  There are a number of testing devices and supplies used to do this.  You don’t have to go sit in a physician’s office and get a blood test, and not get instant results.

Since we’re living in a microwave era now, people want things in a snap.  There are self-test kits available now that you can use to check your blood glucose sugar level on a daily basis.  In fact, the kits are portable that you can conduct the testing at any given time.  These self-test kits are better known as blood glucose meters or monitors, or glucometers.  Whatever you want to call them, they provide the same purpose—testing your blood glucose level.

There are supplies that come with the glucometers that are to be used when testing.  The lancet is used to get a blood sample by pricking your finger or other authorized area.  You are only supposed to use the lancet one time.  Using the same lancet for anther test is not sanitary and can cause you to have an infection or injury.

The test strip is used for the blood sample.  After you’ve pricked your finger, the blood sample goes on the test strip.  The test strip is inserted in the glucometer.  Within seconds, you have your reading and the testing is done.  You can get a meter that uses color to determine your reading or you could go the more popular route with the digital kind.

The popular glucometers include the Accu-Chek and the One-Touch brands.  You can also choose models made from Reli-on and Freestyle.  The test strips come in quantities of 25.  So that means you can get them starting at 25 strips, 50, and so on.

If you’re in a certain income bracket and don’t have insurance, you can get the testers and supplies for free.  You can check with your physician and your local government’s health department.  If you are insured with Medicare and/or Medicaid, you should be able to get free testing supplies through them.  They are affiliated with supply companies that distribute free testers and supplies to people in need.

If you have health insurance, check with your carrier to see if testers and diabetic supplies are covered under your policy.  Most insurance companies offer this, but it’s good to check first prior to making your selection.  In fact, you may be able to get your items free or at a reduced price.

Your glucometer should be dependable and not one that will conk out within a matter of months.  You should probably budget when it comes to the test strips because you will have to constantly purchase them when you’re running out.  That will be a recurring expense.

When purchasing diabetic supplies, it’s important to check expiration dates.  If you don’t, you may end up with readings that are not accurate, which can put you in a tailspin if the reading register a high or low measurement.

Before you settle on a meter and supplies, shop around to make sure you’re getting your money’s worth.
