Anyone who suffers from fibromyalgia is doing themselves a disservice if they do not investigate the difference that proper nutrition can make in their pain and fatigue levels. Self-care is an important aspect of the total treatment “package” for fibromyalgia, and each person should take the time to learn what to eat and what to avoid in order to personalize a sensible food plan that will improve their health in many ways. It has been said that eating the proper foods can heal the fibromyalgia sufferer from the inside out.

What are some of the ways that you can change your diet and improve how you feel?

• Drink more water. Your body is made up mostly of water. The blood is 90% water. Muscles contain around 75% water, and even your bones are 25% water. Without sufficient water in your system, it is very easy to become dehydrated. Dehydration can make the body aches and headaches of fibromyalgia even worse.

• Avoid artificial sweeteners. Studies have proven that people who have fibromyalgia and consume artificial sweeteners have more pain and fatigue.

• Eat less sugar. Many people have reported that they have a huge reduction of their symptoms when they reduce the amount of sweets in their diet.

• Try to limit the amount of preservatives in the foods that you eat. Read the labels. If they are full of words that you are unable to pronounce, then you probably should not eat the item.

• Eat more fruits and vegetables. The vitamins, minerals and antioxidants contained in these superfoods can supercharge your system! Aim for five to nine servings each day

• Eat more protein. Protein has been shown to help fight fibromyalgia fatigue.

• Avoid caffeine. Caffeine can make your pain, fatigue, and other symptoms worse.

• Try mangosteen. Mangosteen is a rainforest fruit that comes from Asia. For many years, the rind of this fruit has been used for pain relief. Research was carried out on this fruit, and the consensus was that mangosteen contains substances that are anti inflammatory and pain inhibiting. It also inhibits the Cox 2 inhibitor better than prescription drugs. You can find a juice blend of mangosteen that contains the pulp as well as the juice.

• Consider food allergies as part of the problem. New studies have indicated that fibromyalgia sufferers may also have food allergies that contribute to their symptoms. An elimination diet could help you to pinpoint any allergic tendencies that you are unaware of. Some of the most common food allergies that can cause fibromyalgia symptoms to rear their ugly heads include nuts, meat, eggs, grains, oats, and dairy.

Maintaining a good diet, making sure to get enough rest, and some gentle exercise done every day has been proven to help control the pain of fibromyalgia. Every person is different – what works for one person will not necessarily work for another. It might take a little trial and error to hit on the right combination of food, exercise and rest to keep your symptoms under control, but the time spent will be well worth it in the long run.
