The symptoms of those suffering from fibromyalgia, are widespread and are accompanied by tender points in certain parts of the body.

• Pain: The pain of FM is widespread, chronic, and profound. Fibro pain is experienced in different intensity and moves to all parts of the body. The pain of FM has been described as aching, twitching, and throbbing deep in the muscles, and stabbing, shooting, pains in muscles and joints. Numbness, burning, and tingling are neurological complaints that add to the suffering of those with FM. Many of those with FM report that the pain is often worse in the morning, or after activity. Aggravating factors to the pain are, cold or humid weather, physical and mental fatigue, excess physical activity, inability to get restorative sleep, physical inactivity, and stress and anxiety. Some sufferers of FM feel the pain in their muscles and some believe the pain originates in their joints. Many with this illness feel pain in both the muscles and joints. Pain worsens with activity and lessens with rest. The pain and other symptoms of FM work together to limit their social and working life. They are not able to get out as much as they once did because of chronic pain and other unfavorable symptoms. This can also cause depression in those with fibromyalgia, as they are not able to continue the lifestyle that they once enjoyed. It is very difficult for these people to accept this fact, just as it is those with heart problems or other limiting disease.

• Fatigue: The fatigue suffered by fibro patients is different from the fatigue that others experience. It is complete exhaustion that makes it difficult to do the simplest activities. This can leave the person with an impaired ability to function physically and mentally. Many FM sufferers have a severe decrease of energy

• Sleep Problems: Many people with FM have a sleep disorder that is associated with the illness. This is a disturbance in stage 4 deep sleep. Fibromyalgia patients are interrupted by “awake” brain activity that makes it impossible to get the restorative sleep we all need to function properly.

• Additional symptoms: Other symptoms, such as headaches, migraines, irritable bowel syndrome, impaired concentration and memory, restless leg syndrome, anxiety, depression, rashes and skin sensitivity, ear ringing, vision problems, dry eyes and mouth, dizziness, impaired coordination, Raynaud’s Syndrome, premenstrual tension syndrome and neurological symptoms.

All of this pain and suffering has gone untreated for many years because the medical community and their stubborn denial of the existence of FM and the possibility that those who complained of widespread pain without laboratory proof, or sign of injury to the area. I have fibro, and remember one doctor whom I followed down the hall asking for muscle relaxers or something for pain, while he hurried to get away from me.

There are still health care professionals that do not believe in the existence of fibromyalgia, and will not acknowledge that one can feel chronic, debilitating pain without definite lab and traditional medical proof of disease or injury.
