How Fibromyalgia Can be Helped by Balancing Your Hormones and Positive Thinking...
Dear Dr. Banerjee: I have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia. I hurt all the time. A month ago I start getting shooting pain down my left leg and left arm. Went to my doctor and he checked to see if I have carpel tunnel syndrome. Well it turns out I don’t, but my arms and wrist and leg burns and tingles. It is worse at night. If I do have fibromyalgia how I do get better? The medications are not working. They just make me drowsy. What should I tell my doctor to do differently. Shanti P. Yulee, FL
Dear Shanti: Fibromyalgia is a serious and crippling conditions. And to complicate things, most doctors do not know what the best fibromyalgia treatment is for their patients. Most of my research point to a hormone imbalance problem.
Also pain is a major thing that will elevate your stress hormone. When you are under pain your cortisol level will sky rocket. And this is when your adrenal glands will burn out from the exhaustion from dealing with the chronic pain.
So one thing you want to do is measure your stress hormone and fix their levels so you can pull your self out of the chronic pain cycle.
Pain is also a major form of inflammation. And a major form of inflammation to the body can come from the digestive tract. If you are eating foods that irritatate your digestive tract, or if you have any parasites, bacterial, or fungal infection, you are going to have chronic inflammation in your gut. That will cause you to have chronic inflammation through out your body. So you want to also check and do specific lab test for your gut.
Let me give you some tips:
Most people will advice you to be “positive” but hardly anyone will tell you how. It is a challenge with the kind of situation fibromyalgia puts you in.
Be brave and determine right now that you will beat fibromyalgia. You are not going to let this condition stop you from living the life you want.
• Track changes – Treasure the days you feel good and jot down the memories and elation. Be optimistic. Although it is easy to “preach” and hard to achieve when fibromyalgia has become your shadow. Put up relaxaing pictures as well as messages on your walls. Pain changes personalities and creates problems unseen during normal times. If you keep detailed notes of each day –with time you will see a pattern emerging. And knowing when to expect “bad times” and what to expect makes things a little more manageable. You can devise ways to “ride out” the troughs. Knowledge becomes a power and weapon that helps plan and combat the illness.
• Happy Things—keep a list of things that make you happy. Maintain a list of enjoyable activities and optimistic feelings. Become engrossed in an activity can help you take your mind away from the pain and suffering. There is a psychological as well as physiological response to events. Laughter and music can help you in your healing process. Try and read humor—jokes or stories. See a beautiful romantic or comic movie; listen to chants/music, use aroma oils or candles. Coax the pain receptors to recede into the background.
• Control your mind—it is your own perspective that determines how you view your life and the world. There are those who consider a glass of water to be half full, while others would consider it half empty. Try and be the first kind – a person that sees benefits where there are none. Accept that you have a problem but don’t let the problem take control of your life. Place an emphasis on: independence of thought and action, individualism, as well as achievement. Adapt to your situation—work around fibromyalgia. Don’t let your situation drag you down –keep your perspective in focus.

• The Grass is Green on the Other Side—Realize that darkness is always followed by light. Try and keep things as sane as possible and instead of berating the problem accept it and try and work around it. See the bright side:
1. We know the disease is not progressive or terminal. 2. One can hope/expect remission. 3. Living life to the “fullest” or as close as possible is achievable. 4. The mind-body and spirit working together can make things happen. 5. A day may dawn when there is a “cure” for the problem.
* Hope --- there is always enough room for hope. Since the early centuries there has been progress in terms of cures as well as pain management. It is certain that –exercise; meditation, relaxation techniques, self-control and more bring remission as well as hope. Therapies are changing rapidly and soon there will be a cure for fibromyalgia.
* Support – create a loving circle around you. If your family and loved ones allow you to “lean/depend” on them then one can tackle any problem big or small. Teach them about the disease, your feelings of despair and helplessness. Do not hesitate in asking for understanding or help. Let them help you by running errands, paying your bills, weeding the garden or shopping for you. Try and have an open relationship and understand the needs as well as feelings of your family.
* Treasure moments--- Instead of thinking of: “Oh gosh how sad” think “Happy.” Use happy memories as well as activities as medicine—to clear your mind of depressing thoughts. When resting let your mind become a canvas on which you paint joyful pictures. Practice in your mind’s eye, singing, dancing, as well as wooing mentally. Use the quite time to plan days ahead—problems solve.
Weave dreams of days when you will be strong and capable. The pain, discomfort, and feelings or despair will be things of the past not the future. Help your mind help your body heal.
Final tip: Most successful treatments for fibromyalgia has to do with balancing your hormones. Your hormones do not spontaneously malfunction by themselves. They are responding to stress. This will create an imbalance between progesterone and cortisol. This is when all the problems start. The best thing to do is test your stress hormone levels and fix them.
