Signs and Symptoms of a Heart Attack
Not all heart attacks are swift and dramatic like what is portrayed in film. With these fictional scenarios, there isn’t too much doubt in anyone’s mind that something serious is happening! The victim in question gasps, grabs his chest, perhaps stammers out a word or two, and then collapses in a heap. In the real world, it isn’t impossible for a heart attack to affect a person like this, but it is not that way for most people.
The signs and symptoms of a heart attack usually appear rather slowly, and you do not get much, if any warning that you are about to experience a health crisis. What are some of the warning signs you can familiarize yourself with in order to be prepared in case you or someone you love experiences a heart attack?
• An uncomfortable feeling in the chest. Sometimes, this is more than just discomfort. A heart attack can cause quite a pain in the center of the chest that often doesn’t go away all that quickly. At other times, this pain will come and go. A feeling of pressure and fullness in the chest is also common. Others have reported a feeling as if something were inside their chest squeezing the area.
One of the best explanations of how it felt to have the chest symptoms of a heart attack was bluntly stated by a patient as “It felt as if an elephant was standing on my chest.” This is something that would get your attention quickly! Yet many people dismiss this pain and the other odd feelings in the chest as indigestion, never realizing that they are doing themselves a real disservice. Since they don’t know what is happening to them, they do nothing instead of calling 9-1-1 and getting help, and their heart is damaged – sometimes beyond repair.
• Pain and discomfort in other parts of the body. Heart attack patients who survived have reported pain or an odd feeling in their left or right arm, sometimes in both arms at once. Other people have back pain, or neck pain. A pain that runs from the neck into the jaw is very common. Stomach distress is also a sign of a heart attack when coupled with the uncomfortable feelings mentioned above. Nausea and/or vomiting can occur also.
• A feeling that you can’t quite catch your breath is another sign and symptom of a heart attack. This can happen at the same time you are experiencing chest pain or discomfort, but it can occur as a stand-alone symptom.
• Feeling faint and lightheaded can also mean that a heart attack is happening. At the same time, you may begin to suddenly have what is commonly termed as “a cold sweat”. If you find yourself in the midst of these symptoms, or if someone you are with is experiencing the chest discomfort along with some of the other symptoms listed here, do not hesitate to call 9-1-1 for help!
The faster you can get to a hospital, the faster you can get treatment that could save your life.
