Heart Attack Symptoms in Women
Many people do not realize that the heart attack symptoms a woman has can be different both in scope and in timing than those of a man. The symptoms most males experience seem to be the “classic” heart attack symptoms that usually come on rather suddenly. Women can experience signs and symptoms of a heart attack as much as an entire month before they actually have this health crisis.
It is crucial for a woman’s current and future health and well-being to be aware of the ways an impending heart attack can make her feel so that she can immediately go and have herself checked out by a doctor. What are some of the most common symptoms that have been reported by those women lucky enough to have survived their heart attacks?
• Fatigue of a type that is out of the ordinary. If you suddenly seem to be very tired for no reason that you can comprehend, be wary and alert.
• Shortness of breath that seems to appear suddenly and lingers.
• A difference in or disturbance in your sleep pattern.
• A weak feeling in one or both arms.
Of course, when considered individually, these symptoms can point to other illnesses rather than a future heart attack. But, when you have one or more of these symptoms, you can consider them as potential warning signals. It can save you life to pay attention to what is going on with your body! Oddly enough, fewer women than men seem to have pain in the chest area as a sign or symptom of a heart attack. This certainly does not mean that a woman should ignore chest pain by any means! It simply points out that statistics show this symptom to be less frequently seen in females.
Women seem to be more likely to experience a type of heart attack that can go unrecognized. This is called a silent heart attack, and it can be deadly, as you have no idea what is happening until the whole thing is over. Women can also develop the same warning signals that a heart attack may be imminent that men do. These symptoms seem to be the most common –
• A pain in the center of your check that lasts longer than just a few minutes. This pain can also go away and then come back.
• An uncomfortable, “full” feeling in the chest as if pressure is being applied from within, often accompanied by sweating.
• Chest pain that radiates from the chest up to your jaw, your neck, or down one or both arms. Anyone, male or female, who notices any of these symptoms should immediately head for the nearest hospital emergency department or call 911. This is crucial, as waiting could damage the heart beyond repair. There are medications which can be given in the hospital which will rid the arteries of any blockage they many have, but this must be administered within one to two hours after the heart attack started in order to be a success. It is also suggested than you take an aspirin when your symptoms suggest you may be having a heart attack. This brings more blood to the heart area, and could end up saving your life.
