Most people that have high blood pressure may never know the cause of their condition. High blood pressure, also called hypertension, can go undiagnosed for many years causing severe damage over time. Only 5 - 10 percent of people suffering from high blood pressure will ever find out the cause. The remaining 90 - 95 percent will go through life never knowing why they have high blood pressure.
For those people that will never know the cause of their high blood pressure, the condition is called primary, or essential, hypertension. When the cause of the hypertension is known, it is called secondary hypertension.
