A woman needs hormone replacement therapy when the hormones that have always been in her body began to lessen during menopause. The symptoms of menopause are caused by this lack of hormones. A safe and effective way to get relief from hot flashes, mood swings, depression and the like is to use hormone replacement therapy.

There are three types of hormone replacement therapy, which are natural hormone replacement therapy, bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, and synthetic hormone replacement therapy.  Synthetic hormone replacement therapy has been in use since the 1950s and is made from such substances as horse urine from pregnant mares. Millions of women took this type of HRT until the late 2002 when some studies indicated that the synthetic form of hormones such as Premarin and Prempro increased the chances of women having strokes and breast cancers.

After this new development, natural and bioidentical hormone replacement therapy became very popular. The differences between the two are as follows.

• Natural hormone replacement therapy is made from plant based items such as soybeans, wild yams, and herbs such as sage, witch hazel, cypress, grapevine, shepherd’s purse, black cohosh, and wild betony. This type of HRT comes in pill or cream form, and can be purchased over the counter at almost any drugstore.

• Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy is considered to be the superior form of HRT because it is identical to the hormones that the body produces.  To get an exact match, a woman has her hormone levels measured by a health care practitioner who prescribes this type of hormones, and she then consults a compounding pharmacy with the results and a prescription. A dose of hormones is then customized especially for her.

Most allopathic doctors think that synthetic hormones are just as good, if not better than bioidentical hormones. But, synthetic hormones are like a foreign object to our bodies. Women are not horses, so why would horse hormones be appropriate for them? There are bioidentical hormones that the pharmaceutical companies have manufactured from plants in order to supply the demand for something more natural. They are available in pills, creams, patches, and vaginal rings, and any allopathic doctor can write a prescription for them.

But most women prefer the idea of having a hormone test to see exactly what their hormone levels are, then having a hormone supplement made up for them that will complement and/or replace the hormones that they are lacking. The best way to ease yourself into natural or bioidentical hormone replacement therapy is to start with what you can easily find, namely, the natural remedies in your drugstore. Give them a try and see what happens. You may find that they do the job for you. If they do not, and your regular doctor is unwilling to help you work through the maze of figuring out exactly what blend of hormones your body needs to feel well, you will need to seek out an alternate practitioner who can help you.

Every woman deserves balanced hormones. Natural and bioidentical hormones are the best choice for every woman instead of synthetic ones. Hopefully the day will come soon when every woman can easily have access to bioidentical hormones that suit her body perfectly.
