What Exactly Is IBS?

IBS, an abbreviation for Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a condition that affects thousands of individuals worldwide. IBS involves problems with the gastrointestinal tract. People of all ages suffer from IBS. It seems that more women live with this condition than men. Children who experience Irritable Bowel Syndrome may go through periods where they don’t have any symptoms. IBS will usually show up again later on in life for these children.

Many people sit down to a meal, any meal and do not worry about their food digesting. They enjoy the food, all sorts of food, swallow it and forget about it. The body, actually the gastrointestinal tract does its job, preparing the food to be passed from the body. This process happens automatically and a normal person is not aware it’s happening. Unfortunately for those who suffer from IBS this is not the case. Sitting down to a meal might be the same, enjoying the food might also be the same, however while the gastrointestinal tract is digesting and preparing the food, a person suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome may be very aware of the activity taking place inside their body. IBS causes much discomfort for the person affected by it.

In normal digestion, food will usually pass from the body in about twenty-four to forty hours. Of course this timeframe changes from person to person depending on their bodies. Many people say their bowel movements are like clockwork. They never need to stress about constipation or sudden bouts of diarrhea. Individuals with IBS cannot count on any sort of regularity. Often times the food leaves the body right after the meal is finished. This can be quite distressing for IBS sufferers. Dining out or having dinner with family and friends can be very stressful. No matter how much the individual might enjoy a nice meal or the whole dining experience, IBS creates limitations for many people.

IBS or Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a chronic condition which means there is no real cure available. This condition can be quite debilitating and unfortunately interrupt the individual’s entire life. IBS includes a number of symptoms which can be painful and often cause affected individuals to feel embarrassed and uncomfortable. This awful condition wreaks havoc on the lives of a multitude of people.

There is plenty to learn about Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Some people mistake this condition for inflammatory diseases such as Colitis. If you are having problems digesting your food or notice changes in your normal bowel movement behavior, it’s imperative to have it checked out by a medical professional.
