Tips to Relieve Stress
Dear Dr. Banerjee: I find that my life has gotten very stressful lately. I am always on the go, go, go. I get home from work, and I have to take care of so many things. What tips would you recommend for stress relief. Laura D.. Woodland hills, California.
Dear Lara: Sounds like you're feeling like everything is getting the best of you, Lara I know the feeling. Here are five easy stress relief tips that work well for my patients. 1. This is my favorite stress relief tip. It's really simple. Take a relaxing bath. Do it all... put the music. The candles and a glass of your favorite drink. Have some chocolate, wine or Champagne. Just close the doors and forget about everything else. This will become your time. You need to make time for you. So close the door and forget about everything else for an hour or so. So for first tip a relaxing bath.. 2. Take a weekend off. Take a weekend and just get out of town. Go somewhere where there's a lot of peace and quiet. Somewhere you could just relax. Also take a journal and relax and gather all your thoughts down. When there's lot of things being thrown at you and you're really stressed out solutions to problems can be very difficult to find. But when you get away from everything and you look at it as a big picture the solutions will just jump out at you. I like to go to the ocean. A love to see the waves, and feel the warm sand underneath my feet.
3. Eat a healthy diet. Having proper diet is very important to handle stress. My newsletter has a lot of tips on what to eat and what not to eat. So if you have not opted in yet, you really don’t want to miss the health information. Exactly what you should eat depends on a lot of factors. These factors are discovered through different lab tests. One thing you should keep in mind is that if you have a plate and you divide the plate into 4 pieces. 2/4th should be vegetables. Lots of greens. Then 1/4th of the plate should be protein, and the last 1/4th section should be gluten free carbohydrates.
4. Get a soothing massage Or just share a massage with your partner. Go all the way out and get soft lights, candles, scented oils. Vanilla, lavender, or sandal wood oils are very relaxing. Or just get a massage from a professional massage therapist. Make sure you drink a lot of water after the massage. When you get a massage a lot of toxins are elimmited. So if you drink the right amount of water your body will be able to flush the toxins out.
5. Start deep breathing. Most people do not know how to breath properly. Most of us have shallow breathing. Try this out. Stand in front of the mirror and take a deep breath. What do you notice. If you see your upper torso and chest move up then you have shallow breathing. So the way to do deep breathing is to use your diaphragm. When you breath in use your stomach instead of your chest. Your stomach should pooch out. Then your body will atomically breath out. It should be in a slow rhythmic motion. Practicing deep breathing every day is a great way to reduce stress.
The above stress relief tips are very simple to implement. These techniques are also very effective. My patients have told me that these easy stress techniques help them to relieve stress, depression, and anxiety. Try it out for about 3 weeks and see for your self if your mood gets better.
