What Is Vaginal Thrush?

Vaginal thrush is a yeast infection.  Normally, small amounts of yeast, called candida, live in the woman’s body.  Inside the vagina, live such yeast with little or no trouble.  If the normal body flora becomes imbalanced, a yeast infection may result.  This is called vaginal thrush.  It is the overgrowth of the fungus that causes the symptoms.

Vaginal thrush affects the vagina and vulvar areas.  The woman’s genitals become very itchy and uncomfortable.  If you have vaginal thrush, you will undoubtedly be very aware that something down south is clearly not right.

The most common complaint among women with vaginal thrush is the severe itching.  The vagina and vulva are extremely uncomfortable and sore.  A burning feeling or sensation may also affect women with vaginal thrush.  The burning sensation may be mild or severe.  Painful urination is another symptom of vaginal thrush.

If you notice a white discharge, do not be overly alarmed.  This thick, odorless discharge is normal for women experiencing vaginal thrush.  The discharge is about the consistency of cottage cheese.

Intercourse may be painful if you are dealing with vaginal thrush.  If you are experiencing moderate to severe symptoms, the thought of intimacy is probably the furthest thing from your mind, but in the beginning, you may notice painful intercourse as one of the first symptoms.  It is rare, but possible to spread thrush to your partner, so abstinence is a good idea during an episode of vaginal thrush.

Nearly 75% of women will suffer from vaginal thrush over the course of their lifetime.  About half of women experience vaginal thrush at least twice in their life.  You may be embarrassed about your medical condition, but don’t be.  Vaginal thrush is extremely common.  It is very easy to get vaginal thrush.  Simply not sleeping well and stress can throw your body out of whack, so to speak.  Having your period or pregnancy can cause this problem.  Some medications can cause vaginal thrush as a side effect.

Although the symptoms of vaginal thrush are similar to an STD, chances are high that you are simply dealing with vaginal thrush.  Seek your doctor’s advice for a specific diagnosis.  It is  possible to spread thrush through sexual intercourse, but it is rare.

Treatments for vaginal thrush are available for women.  Often, you will see ads on television for vaginal yeast infection treatments.   Creams and suppositories are available to treat vaginal thrush without a prescription.  Gynelotrimin and Monistat are two brands available to treat vaginal thrush.  Follow the package directions to completely remedy most forms of yeast infection.  Some treatments for vaginal thrush require more than one application, so do not stop treatment just because your symptoms subside.  Without a full course of treatment, your vaginal thrush will return.

Oral medications are available to treat vaginal thrush, but such methods require a trip to the doctor for a prescription.  Such prescriptions are often effective for the treatment of vaginal thrush, but they have side effects that are not usually associated with OTC methods.

Vaginal thrush is another name for a vaginal yeast infection.  Although you may need to see a doctor, non-prescription treatments are available.
