Treatment of Vaginal Yeast Infection

A vaginal yeast infection is a medical condition that affects many women.  This uncomfortable, painful, and itchy condition can be treated successfully.  Numerous options are available to treat a vaginal yeast infection.  What method is right for you?

Fungal medications are typically used to treat vaginal yeast infections.  In fact, the active ingredient in vaginal yeast infection treatments is the same ingredient found in some antifungal foot creams to treat athlete’s foot.  Most methods of treatment do not require a doctor’s prescription.  Women can access such treatments easily from the health and beauty department at a local department store.  Generic versions of name-brand treatments are also available to women in most instances.  Such treatments for vaginal yeast infection can further reduce the cost making affective treatment available to even more women.

With over-the-counter remedies available for vaginal yeast infections, women are able to effectively treat the vaginal yeast infection privately and inexpensively.  In some cases, a trip to the doctor or gynecologist is not necessary.

Creams are available to treat a vaginal yeast infection.  Many creams should be applied topically to fight the fungus.  If your vaginal yeast infection is caused by more than one microbe, you may need to combine specific treatments.  This will require a visit to your doctor or gynecologist.

Antifungal creams used topically include: chlortrimazole and miconazole.  Clortrimazole is known as Lotrimin.  The miconazole treatment is also called Monistat.  Such treatments can be applied topically by hand or with the convenience of an applicator.  Applicators help women get the proper amount of medication to the affected area with convenience and less mess.

Did you know that oral medications are available to treat vaginal yeast infections?  Fluconazole is an effective treatment for a yeast infection.  This oral treatment for a yeast infection is called Diflucan.  This medication requires a prescription from your doctor or gynecologist.  Doctors resist this form of treatment due to the side-effects.

Topical creams offer less side-effects than an oral medication and work equally as effective, but some patients prefer other options.  Possible side effects of Diflucan can be headache, abdominal discomfort, and nausea.  Vaginal forms of treatment for a vaginal yeast infection will not usually cause such side-effects.  Also, oral treatments should be avoided if a woman is pregnant.

Always follow the advice of
Your doctor or pharmacist when taking a prescription.  Vaginal treatments for a vaginal yeast infection should be taken as directed.  Read any and all information that accompanies the product.  If you select a cream variety, for example to treat your vaginal yeast infection, that requires several treatment applications, do not stop the treatments just because your symptoms have subsided and you feel better.  Some antifungal treatments require more than one dose to completely remedy the vaginal yeast infection.

If your symptoms do not improve and completely go away after treatment, you may not have a vaginal yeast infection.  In this case, what you thought was a vaginal yeast infection may be caused by bacteria, STD, or other underlying medical condition.  In this event, you must see your doctor for a diagnosis and treatment.
